One has to keep these 2 main things in their mind before choosing the brushless motor.
Motor Size – Mostly manufacturers use a standard naming scheme of a 4-digit number for the motors. For instance, a motor named like 2205, in which the first 2 digits represents the diameter of stator (in mm). The last 2 digits represents height (in mm.). So, choose the motor size wisely that required for your project. Speed & RPM Constant – The speed of the motor is interconnected to the fastness you need plane or toy to go. So, to compare the motor speed, you have to look for KV number. This KV is equal to revolutions per volt. It explains how many times the motor will turn per every volt. If the voltage increases then the motor will spin quickly.
Apart from these 2 key factors, as a buyer, you have to consider various factors like winding size, arc magnets, motor shafts, etc. which are clearly mentioned in the below “Buying Guide”. Also, we came up with some best-selling brushless motors. Just go through them and choose your best brushless DC motors, as per your requirement.

Basic Information of Brushless Motors
This is a specialized type of DC motor without any wear components majorly, as it won’t have brushes. It comes in two types – Inrunners and outrunners. One can easily differentiate them with the location of magnet placed in it.
In-runners: The magnet is located inside the core of motor. This type of motor is used generally in applications where high RPM is required like high speed planes or model jets. With this high RPM operation, one can get less torque at lower speeds. The motors in Inrunners will shaft rotates inside the outer case and they are used in RC helicopters. Out-runners: The magnets in this outrunner are located in the outer case. Its motor will spin generally at lower RPM, as it generates more torque at slow speeds. It suits best for direct drive propeller driven aircraft such as quadcopters. In this outrunners, the motor will be attached to a propeller, shaft or both in the whole outer case and rotates around the center.
How Brushless Motor works?
The windings and permanent magnets will work together in the motor to create a motive force by using magnetic fields. This is done by simply switching current through stators wires, which carry electrical current and thereby creates a situation in which the magnetic fields inside the motors are turned out of alignment. Just like horseshoe magnet, the magnetic fields will apply great pressure to align themselves effectively. This process will generate torque and thereby allows the motor to rotate or turn. The electronic speed controller (ESC) will sense the rotational movement (RPM) and thereby controls the flow of current to let it generate a required magnetic field.
What are the main components of this Brushless DC Motors?
In general, a brushless DC motors will consist of 4 major components. They are the stators, permanent magnets, motor casing and shaft of motor. Let’s know about them in detail before purchasing and using them.
1. Stators
They are three circuits with extremely thin and long wires wound in circular pattern around the inner coring of motor. To protect this wire from shorting, it is coated in an enamel. Generally, whenever the current flows through a wire, it produces a magnetic field. If the wire is circled around itself, then the magnetic field is intensified. So, the more current will produce more magnetic field strength and thereby more torque is provided from the motor. The more current will produce more heat and thereby melts enamel coating and causes a short and burned motor. If you want higher power, you have to look for motors with winding of thicker wires, which produce more electrical current by producing less heat. The way this stator is built will determine the motor’s performance.
2. Permanent Magnets
The rotor part of this motor is made with permanent magnets to generate fixed magnetic field, which is similarly generated by a set of rare earth magnets or horseshoe magnets. The magnets are glued to the outer case of the motor with epoxy in the out-runner motors, whereas the magnets are fixed in the inner case of motor in in-runner motors.
3. Casing of Motor
The motor casing is made with a lightweight aluminum metal and used to protect the windings and magnets. In some advanced models, the motor contains a specially designed cases like miniature fans to let air flow all over the motor windings while motor spins, cools it and allow it to create more power for effective functioning.
4. Shaft of the Motor
The motor’s shaft is attached to the spinning part at the outer case in the out runner. It acts as a working component of the motor to transfer the torque, which is produced by the motor to the propeller.
How To Select the Best Brushless Motor?
Choosing a brushless motor for your RC plane, quadcopter or toys is quite a tricky process. So, to get a clear idea on how to choose the best one, you should know about what factors to consider before buying this BLDC motors. Here are some key factors you should check before its purchase. Have a look on it.
1. Motor Size:
One should determine the size of the motor before they are going to purchase or use it. Mostly manufacturers use a standard naming scheme of a 4-digit number for the motors. For instance, a motor named like 2205, in which the first 2 digits represents the diameter of stator (in mm). The last 2 digits represents height (in mm.). If either of these 2 digits are bigger then the motor will handle more power and thereby generates more torque. If the tradeoff is bigger number then it is termed as heavier/bigger motor. Have a look on some of the most commonly used motor sizes.
1806 – Quite Commonly used in mini quadcopters, which swings with 3-inch or 4-inch propellers. 2204 – It is a popular motor for a longer time till 2015 but seen rarely in these days. It uses 5-inch propellers. 2205 – A smallest & popular motor size in these days. You have to use it with 5-inch triple blade props. 2206 – To win in the thrust wars, most manufacturers started increasing their motor size along with using N52 arc magnets. Thus, it results in an increase of 15% (roughly) in thrust. 2207 / 2407 – This 2407 and 2207 motor sizes are rarely found, as it is manufactured to generate thrust more than 50% higher when compared with 2206 type of motors.
2. Speed & RPM Constant:
The speed of the motor is interconnected to the fastness you need plane or toy to go. So, to compare the motor speed, you have to look for KV number. This KV is equal to revolutions per volt. It explains how many times the motor will turn per every volt. If the voltage increases then the motor will spin quickly. All motors will come with KV rating and this rating will determine the fastness of motor turning the propeller. The motor’s maximum RPM will be determined by simply multiplying the KV value with the battery voltage. For instance, your motor has 2300 kV and device will fly with a 4S LiPo battery, then the motor spin at a rate of 14.8 X2300 =34040 RPM. Here we some guidelines / reference on how efficient your motor will run with the chosen propeller.
The motor will work on 2600 KV and more with 4-inch propellers. For 5-inch propellers, the motor run on 2300 – 2600 kV. The propellers with 6-inch will make the device run on motor with 2300 KV or less
3. Winding Size:
In general, the thrust is proportional to power. So, to increase the amount of power a motor will accept, you have to follow a few ways. Choose the motor that have high RPM constant equal to shorten all the windings. This reduce the electrical resistance and increase the amount of current flow through them and thereby provides diminishing returns. Whenever the windings get shorter, then it generates less magnetic force with more heat. Thus, it effects the motor’s ability of converting electrical power to efficiency or torque. To improve the motor’s efficiency of handling more amount of power is simply by increasing the copper amount in windings or simply by adding more windings. Reduce the electrical resistance of windings again to allow more power/current flow. More of copper in the winding results in heavy weight and motors which are stuffed with windings needs to either increase the motor size or compromise on the stator’s structure. In most cases, the size of the motor will be increased and thereby large motors can easily create more thrust. The type of permanent magnet used in the BLDC motor will provide strong magnetic field for windings to work against and thereby increase power. This concept is used till manufacturers started using N52 magnets in their motor and this change resulted in an instant power boost of about 25% when motors are compared with other magnets.
4. Arc Magnets:
The gap between the permanent magnets, which are glued to the stator and bell will also affect the power. The small reductions in the space between the source of two magnetic fields will have an effect on how much force the magnets can assert on each other. This is termed as air gap of the motor. So, to clear this problem, most of the manufacturers improves it by simply turning the permanent magnets into arc shaped one. This Arc magnets will reduce the airgap between the magnet and stator (less than 1 mm) and thereby results in enhanced performance.
5. Motor Shaft:
The length and size of the motor shaft is a not to ignore consideration. Mostly, people choose a motor with 5 mm shaft, why because it is an ideal hole diameter. In case, if you are looking to get a motor with small shaft then simply fit the props with a shaft size adapter. For larger shaft, you have to drill a larger hole on the propeller. Also, be sure that size of the shaft will accommodate the prop and locknut properly. So, the motor should offer the required shaft length. For instance, a shaft length of at least 13 mm long then shorter will work to really torque the nuts to keep them tight during flight and thereby results in stripped threads.
6. Power:
The power of the motor is indicated by Watts (W), which is measured as Voltage X Amps. The higher wattage will make the motor more powerful. Make sure to check how many amps a motor will pull in order to find the right electronic speed controller (ESC). The usage of ESC which is at least 20% larger will make the motor work effectively. In case, having a motor that pulls 20A then use a speed controller of 30A will work fine.
7. Thrust:
One has to know how much thrust their motor will produce with various combinations of propeller and battery. This will help to find out the perfect sized motor for your project. For instance, if you’re looking for a model with 2 lbs weight then pick a motor that produces over 2 lbs of thrust.
8. Electronic Speed Controller (ESC):
The ESC is used to control the movement or speed of brushless motor by simply activating the MOSFETs, to create a rotating magnetic field and thereby let the motor rotates. The higher frequency or quicker ESC, which done through 6 intervals, then the higher will be the motor speed. You should know when to activate the correct phase and for this you need to know rotor position, in which its position will be determined by two common methods.
First Method – The rotor uses hall-effect sensors to sense magnetic field embedded in stator (arranged in 120 – 160 degree from each other) and generate high for one magnetic pole and low for the other opposite one. With this information, the ESC will know when to activate the commutation sequence. Second Method – Here, the sense in the back electromotive force or back EMF is used to determine the rotor position. This EMF is a result of generating magnetic field of the exact opposite process. Or simply changing magnetic field which passes through a coil will induce a current in coil. So, this will induce a current flow in the coil and thereby results in drop of voltage in the coil. The ESC will capture the voltage drops and thus predicts when will be the next interval should have to activate.
Finally, this is the basic working principle of this BLDC motors and ESCs and it remains same even if there is an increase in number of poles of both the stator & rotor. For three phase motor, the number of intervals will increase to complete the cycle.
9. Weight:
The brushless motors for mini-quad should have at least four and each gram should save on the motor and gets multiplied by four. So, the heavier motor will produce more power and thereby easily offset their weight.
10. Price:
The price of the product will determine its quality and motor’s efficient performance. For buying the best quality brushless motor, one has to spend at least $10 – $25 on their motors. Also, one has to look for the warranty provided by the manufacturer on that product.
Benefits of Brushless Motors:
Brushless DC motors are electronically commuted and won’t use brushes for commutation. It comes with several advantages over the traditional brushed DC motors. A few are mentioned below.
It can be operated at high speeds of up to 100,000 RPM rather than brushed motors with high RPM of 20,000. It comes with a longer service life of about 10,000 hours of operation. However, there are no wearing parts in this motor, except bearings and thereby this BLDC motor require less maintenance. They are efficient, reliable and long lasting. Its motor will be operated at high speeds, which makes it suits best for fans, grinders, remote cars, quadcopters, and saws. An encoder is systematically equipped in this BLDC motors that allows for determination of rotor position and electronic switching. Thus, makes it a perfect for applications with servomotor precision.
Disadvantages of Brushless Motors:
This BLDC motor has some disadvantages, which are mentioned below.
It would be difficult to control the motor without a regulator. In drive applications, it needs specialized gearboxes and low starting loads, which causes it complex. It costs higher than brushed or other types of DC motors why because it is essential to integrate a controller, a switching controller.
Conclusion
A brushless motor has a significantly higher operating efficiency than a brush based motor which is why most of the drone warriors prefer to build their quadcopters using a brushless motor. Out of all the listed brushless motors, the Traxxas brushless power system stands out. With a great power output, a 3,500 RPM/V voltage rating, speed control mounting plate, 3 drive electric speed control and limited throttle features, it is the best brushless motor to buy for both; beginners and experienced drone enthusiasts.
